• The use of respectful language.
• Change through open and effective communication.
• Thoughtful decision-making.
Storytelling Alberta will not tolerate the following behaviours:

• Harassing behaviours, including but not limited to unwelcome comments, actions, jokes, taunts, suggestions or speculations.

• Threats, including but not limited to any act, gesture or statement that gives any person reasonable cause to believe that there is risk of injury to themselves, another person or SA’s or an affiliate’s property.
Access
We recognize that barriers—whether physical, financial, cultural, or systemic—can prevent individuals from engaging with storytelling programs. To ensure accessibility for all, we commit to:
· Providing, whenever feasible, storytelling events, workshops, and resources in multiple formats, including online, in-person, and accessible digital content.
· Ensuring venues for in-person events are accessible to individuals with mobility challenges.
· Offering programs at a reasonable cost whenever possible to remove financial barriers to participation.
Equity
Equity means recognizing that different individuals and communities face different barriers to participation. We commit to:
· Offering storytelling opportunities for storytellers from underrepresented communities, including Indigenous, Black, racialized, 2SLGBTQ+, and disabled storytellers.
· Striving to create culturally relevant and inclusive storytelling initiatives that engage diverse communities.
· Working with equity-seeking groups to understand and, whenever feasible, incorporate their ideas into storytelling initiatives.
Diversity
Diversity is central to our work, as storytelling thrives on a multiplicity of voices and experiences. We commit to:
· Showcasing stories that reflect the cultural, linguistic, and social diversity of Alberta.
· Encouraging Indigenous, immigrant, and marginalized voices to share their narratives.
· Encouraging intergenerational and cross-cultural storytelling to build bridges between different communities.
· Encouraging multilingual storytelling initiatives to promote linguistic diversity.
Anti-Racism
Storytelling Alberta acknowledges the historical and systemic impact of racism and is committed to actively challenging it. We commit to:
· Including anti-racist narratives in our programming to challenge stereotypes and promote social justice.
· Adhering to our policies and mechanisms for addressing racism and discrimination within our organization and events.
· Collaborate, whenever feasible, with organizations advocating for racial justice to amplify anti-racist storytelling.
Implementation and Accountability
To ensure that our commitments translate into action, we commit to:
· Regularly reviewing and updating this policy to reflect evolving best practices in access, equity, diversity, and anti-racism.
· Inviting community members to share concerns and suggestions regarding our inclusivity efforts through the “Contact Form” on the “Contact” page on our website.
· Engaging in active outreach to diverse communities to ensure broad and meaningful participation.
· The Storytelling Alberta Extended Executive Officers (President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Chapter Presidents, and Website Tech) are responsible for overseeing the implementation of the policies and initiatives named herein.
· Having our SA Executive Officers (President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Registrar, Past President), in consultation with other parties as needed, take appropriate action to ensure a respectful environment. While Executive members will focus on education, sensitization and mediation to address discriminatory behaviour, further action could include barring a person from contracted or volunteer duties or from being a Storytelling Alberta member.
Conclusion
At Storytelling Alberta, we recognize that the stories we tell shape our communities and our collective understanding. By including respect, access, equity, diversity, and anti-racism policies in our operations, we aim to ensure an inclusive, just, and vibrant storytelling culture—one where diverse voices are heard and respected.
