Elastic Stories: Creating Short Versions of Long Tales

Description:
Storytelling opportunities often come with time limits. You may be asked for a short 5 minute tale or, perhaps, given a story maximum of 10 minutes. What happens if you've got the perfect story - but it's waaay too long for the spot? In this workshop, we'll examine story elements and structure, then use these to explore ways to cut story length without losing the essence of a tale.
Workshop time will be divided between group discussion, individual writing, and work in pairs.

Participants should come with:

  • A printed copy of a story they're quite familiar with, (double-spaced, 10-15 minutes in performance length), and be prepared to "hack away".

  • Lined writing paper (not a note pad), pencil & eraser

The Importance of Storytelling in our Lives

Description:
Storytelling a necessity for a well-balanced life and society.  Gail will be exploring some of the myriad of reasons why storytelling is so vital for all of us regardless of our age or position in society.
She has long maintained that storytelling is a major communication tool for all of us as we [re]discover ourselves and our responsibilities as individuals and as members of our changing and increasingly volatile environment.  The telling of stories for tellers and listeners is a viable and powerful agent of change and understanding both internally and externally, aiding in the healing process of individuals and communities.  Stories are extremely valuable for all of us and the sharing of them is an essential part of being human.  Gail’s ultimate aim is that by the end of our session we will be adding to our catalogue even more examples of the importance of storytelling in our lives.
